Dos Pueblos opens CIF playoffs against Camarillo

Dos Pueblos drew Camarillo from the Pacific View League for its first-round opponent in the CIF football playoffs.

The 7-3 Chargers, who won the Channel League championship for the first time since 1979, will host the Scorpions (7-3) in a Western Division game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The winner will be matched up against either No. 1-ranked Serra or Beverly Hills in the second round.

Camarillo, the PVL’s No. 2 team, is led by the passing of quarterback Zandro Diaz. He’s thrown for 2,703 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Carpinteria and Bishop Diego join DP in the postseason. Carpinteria (7-3) travels to Montebello to play Cantwell-Sacred Heart (9-1) in a Northwest Division opener while Bishop Diego (5-5) visits Sierra Canyon (9-1) in Chatsworth in an East Valley Division first-round game.

Bishop will be facing an opponent whose only defeat this season came against top-ranked Paraclete. Sierra Canyon, the No. 2 team from the Alpha League has a balanced attack. Quarterback Tyler Stewart has passed for 1,840 yards and 26 touchdowns, 16 of them to receiver Shane Harrison. Xavier Menifield leads the ground game with 812 yards on 71 carries and nine TDs.

Carpinteria’s opponent is carried offensively by running back Jonathan Mesa. He’s rushed for 1,669 yards and has had two games with more than 300 yards on the ground. Mesa averages 9.48 yards per carry for the Del Rey League runners-up.

In the 8-man football playoffs, second-seeded Cate travels to Excelsior Education Center for a second-round game, while Laguna Blanca plays host to third-seeded Santa Clarita Christian.
