Carpinteria captures opener in OT

Carpinteria’s girls basketball team overcame Hueneme 47-43 in overtime on Tuesday, recording the win in the season opener.

Melissa Lemus knocked down three free throws in the extra period to give the Warriors the boost they needed after sqaundering a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter. Jenny Leonard scored a basket and Mirina Deleon hit another free throw as Carpinteria scored six points in overtime.

Lemus finished with a team-high 13 points to go with five assists and five steals.

Deleon and Juli Cullins matched each other’s 12 points and Cullins added 13 rebounds. Leonard collected nine rebounds and Dakotah Wilcox had seven.

Warriors head coach Dan Mercer noted his team’s rebounding as being a major factor in the game. With three scorers reaching double figures, Mercer was pleased with the opener.

“I’m excited about our balance,” Mercer said.

The Warriors have the rest of the week free of games but have a busy schedule next week, starting with Cate on Tuesday.
