Ventura’s Keihan Gibbs completed three touchdown passes in the first quarter on Friday night, bad news for a San Marcos team that had no answers for the Cougars offense in a 44-7 Channel League decision.
Ventura racked up 27 points in the first quarter and scored 37 unanswered before Jon Kim gave the Royals their first points just before halftime. Joe Rivera found Kim on a short 2-yard pass play.
“We can’t afford to turn the ball over,” said Royals head coach Jeff Hesselmeyer told the Ventura Star. “Ventura showed great sportsmanship tonight and hats off to them.”
Moses Cruz rushed for 31 yards for the Royals as San Marcos accumulated 130 yards of total offense.
Ventura’s Nick Rudolph caught his 14th touchdown of the season in the first quarter and totaled 91 yards receiving in the game. Patrick Kim was the Cougars’ leader on the ground with 82 yards on 17 carries.
The win makes Ventura 3-0 in the Channel League, 6-3 overall. The Royals fall to 0-2, 1-7.
