THE NEXT LEVEL: Toole makes immediate impact at Stanford

Oliver Toole tore it up in the local waters as a prep sailor for Santa Barbara High and as a youth in the local sailing club.

He’s continued that success at the collegiate level as a freshman at Stanford.

Oliver Toole won his first collegiate regatta for Stanford.

Toole last week was honored as the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference Sailor of the Week following his single-handed victory at the PCC Championships in Long Beach.

In his first college competition, Toole won seven out of 14 races in the two-day singlehanded regatta and finished in the top-three in 12 of them. On the second day, he won five of seven races and finished 17 points ahead of second-place competitor Sean Kelly of Cal Maritime.

Toole dominated youth and high school sailing events in Santa Barbara and Southern California. He’s also competed all over the world, sailing at the 49er Europeans this past summer in Poland, the 29er and 420 World Championships in Italy in 2009 and at the ISAF Youth Worlds in Canada in 2007.

Oliver’s father, Pat, also is a highly successful sailor. He and his 3 Big Dogs crew qualified for the J24 World Championships in Argentina.

YAHYAVI IS GOLDEN: Stanford’s Dominique Yahyavi tapped in a double-overtime golden goal to secure a crucial 1-0 Pac-10 men’s soccer road victory over Oregon State. The Cardinal and Beavers played 106 minutes of scoreless soccer before the Cardinal broke through with the game winner.

Adam Jahn created the chance, firing a shot on goal that was deflected by Oregon State goalkeeper Steve Spangler. The rebound trickled in front of the goal and Yahyavi was there to tap it in for his team-leading fifth goal of the season. It was the second game-winning goal of the season for the former Santa Barbara High star.

VASSAR’S NO. 1: Junior Jennifer Beckerman is playing No. 1 singles and doubles for the Vassar College women’s tennis team during its fall season.

Beckerman, a Santa Barbara High alum, is undefeated in her last four matches.

BACK IN COACHING: Former UCSB All-American and pro beach volleyball player Brooke Hanson is the assistant coach for the women’s volleyball team at Oxnard College.

Hanson is helping head coach and Santa Barbara High alum David Fischer.

Hanson worked as an assistant for Kathy Gregory at UCSB before devoting full time to beach volleyball.

“I’ve been looking for the right opportunity to get back into it,” Hanson told the Ventura County Star. “I have an opportunity be part of something and build a program. It seemed like a good fit.”

“Brooke will bring a wealth of professional experience and will act as a great mentor for all of our student-athletes,” said Oxnard athletic director Jonas Crawford in a statement.

“Obviously, it’s not known as a volleyball powerhouse, but I don’t see how it can’t be,” said Hanson of Oxnard. “We are in a good area. We actually have a good group of girls right now. They just haven’t had a lot of experience.”
