San Marcos fights off Owls, prevails in five sets

San Marcos got pushed to the limit by Laguna Blanca in a non-league crosstown girls volleyball match and pulled out a five-set win on Thursday night a Maury Halleck Gym.

The scores were 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 20-25, 15-13.

San Marcos coach Erica Downing said she told her team after the  fourth set that Laguna Blanca was playing like it wanted the match more than they did.

That clicked with the Royals. They regrouped and made some clutch plays to take the match.

“In the last game it just came down to one or two plays,” Laguna Blanca coach Jim Alzina said.

Katherine Crook and Jaimie Mayner paced the Royals with 11 kills each, and Maynor had seven blocks. Emma Campbell picked up 25 digs.

For Laguna Blanca, Amanda Harvey led all hitters with 13 kills and Amanda Schulenberg added 10. Lillie Hodges had 20 digs and Arabella Weston-Smith served six aces.

The Owls (11-2) are ranked No. 2 in CIF Division 4-A.

Alzina said it was exciting for his team to play a bigger school like San Marcos.

“Any time we get games with Channel League teams it’s great,” he said. “Any time we can play large schools and play at that level we’re happy. We really wanted to win.”
