Dons eye fifth, Chargers suffer letdown at TOC

Santa Barbara High started its own girls volleyball tournament by sweeping defending state champion Newport Harbor at the Tournament of Champions on Friday.

“(Coach) Dan Glenn has five state titles, so anytime you play well and beat a team like that it’s great,” said Dons assistant coach Lee Carlander.

In the day’s second match, Santa Barbara took a 2-1 set lead on La Costa Canyon but ended up losing in the fifth set 15-6. It was knotted up at 5-5 before the Dons got into a funk and gave up a 10-1 run to close it out. They’ll play Archbishop Mitty with a trip to the fifth-place game on the line at 9 a.m. Saturday.

One of the keys to the win over Newport Harbor, according to Carlander, was moving 6-foot-3 Holland Crenshaw from the right side to the middle, where she tallied 10 kills. Eve Ettinger had 13 kills in the sweep and Emma Mascari made a great dig before ending the match with an ace.

In the second match, JV call-up Frankie Lewis had eight kills and Lauren Capritto shoveled up 14 digs. Dani Rottman also had a solid performance with four solo blocks, 11 kills and six digs.

Things didn’t go as well for Dos Pueblos, as the Chargers were swept by Cathedral Catholic 28-26, 25-19, 30-28 to kick things off, hampered by 12 missed serves.

“We were mentally somewhere else. Give credit to Cathedral Catholic. They were better team this time,” said coach Todd Garrett.

Later in the day, the Chargers were swept by Santa Margarita. They’ll face Buchanon at 9 a.m. Saturday.
