Chargers just miss making final at Cal Challenge

Dos Pueblos knocked off perennial Southern Section girls volleyball power MIra Costa in the quarterfinals and then fell to host Torrey Pines in the semifinals to finish in third place at the California Challenge on Saturday.

Taylor Racich pounded 13 kills and Nicki Brown played stellar defense with 11 digs as the Chargers (14-2) gutted out a 25-23, 25-22 win over the No. 4 team in CIF Division 1-AA. DP is ranked ninth. Sarah McKinny played a strong match against the Mustangs with three blocks.

In the semifinals, Racich piled up 17 kills, Amanda Moriarty had 10 digs and setter Tristan Racich handed out 37 assists and added five kills in a tough 19-25, 25-18, 25-23 loss to Torrey Pines.

“That was pretty exciting,” DP assistant coach Jacky Yao said of the semifinal match. “We were two points from the championship.”

Taylor Racich was named to the all-tournament team.

Dos Pueblos returns home for a Tuesday night showdown against Santa Barbara for the Channel League championship. If the Chargers win, they’ll be the outright champs. A Santa Barbara victory would create co-champions.
