Chargers force Dons to share

Dos Pueblos wasn’t going to allow Santa Barbara to celebrate on its home course.

The Chargers got a 38 from Emily Fox and a 39 from Vanesa Villa and beat the Dons 211-220 to win a share of the Channel League girls golf title on Monday at Glen Annie Golf Course.

A Santa Barbara win would have given the Dons (6-1) the outright championship. They handed DP a rare defeat in their first meeting.

As it stands now, if the they beat Ventura today they’ll tie DP for the league title, which will be their first in program history.

“The difference today was Emily and Vanesa played really strong,” said Santa Barbara coach Ryan Throop.

“Both teams played well. We just played a little better than they did,” DP coach Rob Schiff said. “Almost all the scores were between 42 and 45.The difference was that Emily and Vanesa were in the 30s They played well enough for us to come out on top. Our No. 1 and 2 players led the way today.”

The Chargers  (7-1 in league) also showed good balance. After Fox and Villa, Paige Granneman shot a 43, Hannah Nolan a 45 and Bekah Beveridge a 46.

The Dons’ Alyssa Crane shot her lowest score of the season with a 45. Saralisa Ortega led a balanced lineup with a 42. Haley True, who just missed a hole-in-one on No. 9, shot 43 and Sarah Kirkwood, Olivia Fanaro and Crane all came in at 45.
