Santa Barbara nabs first-ever win over DP

Haley True shot a steady round of 45 at par-36 Birnam Wood Golf Club on Tuesday to lead the Santa Barbara High golf team to its first-ever win over the Dos Pueblos dynasty, 248-241.

“People have asked me about it, and from what I gather we have only lost two other Channel League matches in 12 years,” said DP coach Rob Schiff. “One was to La Reina when they used to be in our league and the last was to San Marcos in either 2000 or 2001… Congratulations to them. They’ve been steadily getting better and it’s a good thing that the Channel League is getting so competitive.”

DP’s Emily Fox took home medalist honors with a round of 40, but the Dons pulled through in the final group.

“We knew it was close, but after the final scores came in all the girls looked at me and were like ‘What? Really?'” said Dons coach Ryan Throop. “I don’t think it hit them right away, but it’s definitely one of their goals to possibly be Channel League champs.”

Vanesa Villa shot a 44 for the Chargers (6-2, 2-1) and Kylie Wagner followed up True’s round with a 47. The Dons are now 10-3 overall and 3-0 on the year.
