San Marcos finishes Riverside tournament on high note

San Marcos bounced back from a flat performance in its first game and went on an offensive explosion at the Riverside Invitational water polo tournament on Saturday.

Tyler Lisea and James Sweeney each scored five goals in a 15-5 rout over Roosevelt. Kristian Sloan and Andre Rivera added two goals apiece. Goalie Chris Bebb stopped 15 shots.

In its first game on Saturday, San Marcos lost to Martin Luther King 9-6. Jorge Flores led the Royals with two goals.

“We came out flat in the morning and couldn’t really get anything going,” San Marcos coach Jeff Ashton said. “Jorge Flores put together a pretty good performance with two goals, but too many exclusions cost us a chance to pick up a much needed win in the tournament.

“Our second game we came out a little better and went up 11-4 by halftime.  James Sweeney set the pace with five goals in the first half and allowed us to rotate some players through and finish the tournament on a high note.”

San Marcos (2-5) opens Channel League play on Tuesday against Santa Barbara.
