Rams steamroll to 48-0 decision

Kyle Mayfield, pictured fighting off an Antelope Valley Christian tackler, scored three times for Cate.

Cate's Gregory Mak threw two touchdowns to Luke Shover and scored another rushing.

Cate was simply too much for visiting Antelope Valley Christian in 8-man football on Saturday, as the Rams scored at will in a 48-0 mercy-rule victory that was called just after halftime.

Cate was dominating in the first quarter, quickly building a 41-0 lead by the end of the first 15 minutes. Sophomore Kyle Mayfield scored three rushing touchdowns during that time while quarterback Gregory Mak connected with Luke Shover for two more scores.  Mak ran in a touchdown of his own and Cormac O’Connor added another to round out the scoring.

Cate’s starters were pulled after the score was 27-0 and the Rams’ regular starting quarterback, Mackie Greason, did not play a down.

“I would have liked to see the first-teamers in a little bit more to get their timing down,” said Cate head coach Ben Soto, noting that at least his younger players got some playing experience in exchange.

Shover saw it that way too.

“It was good to get the younger guys some experience,” said the senior receiver/linebacker. “We have some tougher opponents scheduled later on so we’ll get our chance.”

Cate (1-0), which returns most of its players from last year’s playoff team, plays again in two weeks at High Desert Academy.
