Dons hang tough before faltering in second half

BEVERLY HILLS — Santa Barbara’s offense struggled to move the football, but the Dons were still in the game in the third quarter against Beverly Hills.

Santa Barbara was in a 7-7 tie before the Normans scored three unanswered touchdowns and a safety in the last 18 minutes to score a 29-7 non-league Friday night.

Beverly Hills took the lead for good when quarterback Josh Newman scored on a 1-yard run with 6:24 left in the third quarter.

Frank Brown had a 73-yard punt return and added another touchdown on a 21-yard run.

Greg Townsend, Jr., the son of the former Oakland Raiders star, sacked Santa Barbara quarterback Shawn Ramos for a safety.

Ramos scored the Dons’ touchdown on a 2-yard run in the second quarter.

Ramos had a tough night passing as he completed 4 of 13 passes for only 12 yards.

Bradford Jellison led the Dons offense with 42 yards rushing on 14 carries.

The Dons (1-1) made only five first downs in the game.

“We’re going to make mistakes, and we’ll learn from our mistakes and go forward,” said Santa Barbara coach Jaime Melgoza. “We need to be more disciplined.”
