Carpinteria shows coach it can play with intensity

Carpinteria’s Katie Dolge didn’t recognize the volleyball team she was coaching in the first game of Thursday’s match against Rio Mesa.

“They came out scared, tentative and quiet,” Dolge said after a 25-9 thumping.

The Warriors regrouped and played much better in the next two games, but they still came out on the short end, falling 25-18, 25-17.

“In the second game, it was the team I recognized in practice every day,” said Dolge of the Warriors’ improved play. “Our defense picked up in that second game.We were fighting back and digging balls. That made a huge difference,”

Libero Shelby Dunlap picked up 22 digs to pace the Carpinteria defense. Opposite Lacy Bushey had four kills and four digs.

The Warriors (0-3) return to action Wednesday at Dunn School.
