Breakers victorious in Labor Day Classic

The Santa Barbara Breakers were successful over the weekend winning their Breakers Labor Day Classic with a 104-67 shellacking of the EBL Stars (Entertainment Basketball League) and an 88-73 thumping of the Hollywood Hooptainers.

In the 104-67 win, Tournament MVP Josh Stanhiser (7’1 center) scored 15 points; 16 rebounds, dominating the inside at both ends of the floor. Stanhiser, a graduate of Univ. of Hawaii and recently returning from a professional gig in Uruguay, also blocked 4 shots while UCSB grad, James Powell, hit two key 3 pointers during the Breakers sprint to a 38-20 advantage in the 2nd quarter.

The game was knotted up at 14 apiece after one quarter but the “soup of the day” was fastbreak basketball for the Breakers in the final 36 minutes of the contest. Also contributing to the offensive barrage was Marcus Palmer’s (Cent. Connecticut State) 25 points and 12 rebounds; Tony Rowe’s (Oxnard CC) 16 points and 3 steals; Ray Reese’s (LA DFenders)15 points; Powell’s 14 points and Thomas Taylor (Tim Taylor’s twin brother) 12 points.

In game two, the game seesawed back and forth with the first quarter ending in a deadlock at 20 apiece. Behind Mark Peters 17 points and 3 steals, the Breakers took a 43-36 edge at halftime. The Hooptainers would not go away as they held a brief 53-51 lead before the Breakers closed out the quarter with 2 treys from Powell and two inside scores by Stanhiser.

In the fourth and final frame, the Breakers outscored their opponents 26-18 and held a lead of 21 with 2 minutes to play in the contest. This spark was ignited by Palmer, Reese and Powell’s trifecta output. They all finished with 16 points apiece.

The Breakers, 21-9 (2010 season), will now concentrate on their China Tour, which will begin October 6 thru the 26th. Coach Curt Pickering is diligently assembling their 11 man squad. They will play a 10 game schedule, playing against CBA (China Basketball Association), the Canadian All Stars and a professional club team from Brazil.
