In her preparation for the Age-Group World Triathlon Championships, UCSB’s Katherine Warren won the 1-mile swim at Tuesday’s Reef and Run Series at East Beach.
Warren, who competes for the UCSB triathlon team and was recently elected to the USA Triathlon Collegiate Commission, finished her cold-water plunge in 21 minutes, 40 seconds.
Warren, 20, will be going to the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary in September. She finished fifth in the undergrad division at the USA Triathlon Collegiate Nationals.
Greg Gaitan placed second on Tuesday in 21:54 and Jeremy Vaa was third in 22:02.
Mike Sullivan edged out local Doug Parent in the 1-kilometer swim. Sullivan came in in 18:21, four seconds ahead of Parent. Ryan Wenger (20:55) was third and Marianne Elefant (20:58) was fourth and the top woman finisher.
The runs were won by Daniel Martin (12:02) in the 2-miler and Ed Smith (27:44) in the 4-miler.
Sullivan took top honors in the duathalon (2-mile run, 1-k swim) in 35:35. Parent placed second in 38:27 and Sean Burnett third in 40:45. Elefant was the first woman finisher (fourth overall) in 41:01.
