USF sends Gauchos down the beaten trail

SAN FRANCISCOUCSB’s first road game of the 2010 season resulted in its first loss, a 4-1 defeat at the University of San Francisco.

UCBS drops to 3-1 with the loss while USF improves to 3-0.

Senior Lauren Maris opened scoring for San Francisco at 27:55 in the first half. She took a pass from forward Molly Hall before firing in the goal from the top left corner of the box. The goal marked the first of the season for the Dons’ captain.

Less than 10 minutes later, freshman Hanna Haanes scored her second goal of the season, putting the Dons up 2-0. Haanes headed a set piece from Ashley O’Brien just past the fingers of Gaucho sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Gonzalez at 38:51 for her second goal of the season.

San Francisco took the 2-0 lead into halftime, and then scored at 59:41 to make it 3-0. Hall connected on her first goal of the season, taking a pass from Christina Moberg and knocking it in from about six yards out.

The Gauchos broke up the shutout at 78:49, as Erica Seidman connected off of a corner from Jacqui Simon. The score was Seidman’s third of the season.

O’Brien responded for USF three minutes later, completing the scoring at 4-1. Hall brought the ball through the midfield, fending off a number of UCSB defenders, before passing to O’Brien who fired a shot from 10 yards out in the left side of the.

Offensively, the game was evenly played with UCSB taking eight shots to USF’s seven. Yet, the Gauchos held the corner kick edge, 6-3.

UCSB will continue its five-game road trip when it plays at the University of Minnesota on Friday, Sept. 3 at 5:00 p.m. (PDT). The Gauchos will also play Marquette in Minneapolis on Sunday, Sept. 5.
