SBCC track, turf field to reopen on Sept. 1

Runners, walkers and fitness enthusiasts can rejoice. The renovation projects at City College’s La Playa Stadium will be completed ahead of schedule, the school announced.

The new turf field and all-weather track surface will reopen for the college and community use on Wednesday, Sept. 1. The original plan called for two phases of work, with the second closure from mid-December through January.

La Playa Stadium is one of the most popular venues in the community for people to exercise and train.

“We are pleased that the contractor accelerated certain aspects of the projects, and that all the work can be completed in just one phase by September 1,” Dr. Andreea Serban, SBCC Superintendent/President, said in a statement. “The track and field are completely resurfaced and meet required safety standards for our athletes and the community who use our facilities. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during the stadium’s field closure.”

To mark the occasion of the re-opening of Linda L. Geyser Memorial Field and the Nick Carter Track, SBCC is planning a celebration before its season-opening football game against Hancock College on Saturday, Sept. 4.

The party will include a “Grid Iron Tri-Tip Steak Cook-off” at 4 p.m. and a stadium and track dedication ceremony at 5:40. The game kicks off at 6 p.m. At halftime, randomly selected fans have a chance to kick a field goal for a $10,000 prize.

Pre-sale meal tickets are available for $10; at the door $12. All proceeds will benefit the athletic departments at both SBCC and Hancock.
