City College soccer, volleyball teams open season

The fall sports season gets under way for SBCC on Friday with three teams in action.

The men’s and women’s soccer squads will take on the College of the Sequoias at Girsh Park in Goleta (women 2 p.m.; men 5 p.m.) while the women’s volleyball team makes it debut at the Pasadena Quad Tourney.

The soccer teams are playing at Girsh Park because the lanes on the new track at La Playa Stadium are being painted.

The men’s soccer team is coming off a 9-7-5 campaign that featured its second straight WSC title. They’re 22-2-4 in conference play over the last two seasons. The women’s soccer squad went 10-4-6 last year. John Sisterson coaches both teams.

Ed Gover, last year’s WSC Coach of the Year, is starting his 20th season as women’s volleyball coach. They went 21-3 in 2009 and shared the WSC title with Moorpark. Setter Kelsey Soos and middle hitter Jenn Waddill, a pair of first-team All-WSC performers, will lead the Vaqueros in their Friday matches against Riverside and Pasadena.

The SBCC football team doesn’t begin its season until Sept. 4, but coach Craig Moropoulos’ Vaqueros will hold an intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday at 6 p.m. at La Playa Stadium.
