Roth, Chavez, and Roth on top at Nite Moves

San Marcos High School Aquatics coach Brian Roth bettered his swim time by 30 seconds on Wednesday at Nite Moves, posting a winning time of 14 minutes and six seconds in the 1k swim.

Michael Chavez, a former UCSB miler, outpaced the competition in the weekly 5k run, finishing a full minute ahead of second-place finisher Sergey Sushchikh. Chavez recorded a time of 14:53.  The leaders were fairly spread out, with only four runners breaking the 17-minute mark. Santa Barbara teenager Max Davis was third behind Sushchikh in 16:49.

Roth kept going after the 1k swim, completing the aquathon in sixth place.  Anthony Borton captured the overall aquathon title, edging Camarillo’s Norbert Hoehne. Borton was fifth after the swim leg, but the 41-year-old’s run time of 21:20 was better than any aquathon competitor and made the difference.

Roth’s wife, Leslie, also found great success on Wednesday, being the first female to complete the aquathon course. Roth, 14th overall, beat out Liz Groom with a time of 43:41.

Wednesday’s event was the 13th installment of the 20-week run/swim summer series. Next week’s races begin with the 1k ocean swim at 6:15 p.m. at Leadbetter Beach.
