Former UCSB star Chris Pontius had a hat trick taken away from him after a review of his goals during DC United’s 3-2 victory over the Seattle Sounders in a Major League Soccer match on Thursday in Seattle.
The league reviewed Pontius’ goals and concluded that his third score should have been credited to teammate Adam Cristman.
The play in the 79th minute started when Santino Quaranta sent a free kick toward the left side of the penalty area. Pontius headed a shot across the box toward the far post. Sounders goalkeeper Kasey Keller chased it as Cristman just got a touch on the ball to poke it into the net, giving United a 3-0 lead.
Pontius, who has been sidelined most of the season with a hamstring injury, scored in the 39th minute after a poor Seattle clearance. Using the moves Gaucho fans enjoyed seeing during his career at UCSB, he faked two opponents out of his path and launched a 30-yard shot that caromed off Patrick Ianni and flew past Keller for a 1-0 lead.
On the second goal, coming in the 44th minute,Pontius charged up the middle and fought through an Ianni arm tackle to fire another left-footed shot that Keller somehow let squeeze between his gloves and bounce just over the goal line despite his desperate lunge to retrieve it.
The goals were his first of the season.
