SoCal Sectional’s Round of 16 stops local juniors

Ryan Peus, Kayla Day, Lauren Stratman, Marianna Alevra, Kevin Ha and Sasha Gryaznov advanced into the later rounds of the 108th Southern California Junior Sectional this weekend, each winning several matches to navigate the massive draws found at the tournament, which is one of the country’s largest junior tournament that takes nearly two weeks to complete.

The Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club in Fountain Valley hosted the event.

Peus was second seeded in the 12-and-under girls division, falling in the Round of 16 to 12th-seeded Raquel Pedraza. Jada Hart went on to defeat Pedraza in the next round on the way to winning the title. Day and Alevra also competed in the girls 12s, winning their first matches before exiting in the Round of 16.

Stratman was another to reach the Round of 16, doing it in the girls 16-and-under division. Stratman, the tenth seed, was knocked out by sixth-seeded Nicolette Tran 6-4, 6-1.

Gryaznov, a recent Dos Pueblos graduate, was stopped in the Round of 32 by third-seeded Gregory Scott 6-1, 6-2.

Petar Jivkov put together a solid run in the Boys 14s. The soon to be San Marcos sophomore won three matches before falling in the Round of 32. Sixth-seeded Kimo Barrere was too much for Jivkov, winning 6-0, 6-0.

Ha advanced through two rounds in the boys 10s bracket, eventually getting stopped by Parth Sharma in the Round of 16.

You forgot to mention Marianna Alevra in your article. I was one of the local girls from Santa Barbara who made it to the Girls' 12 Singles Final Rounds Round of 16, too. I was seeded eleventh. Here's a link: http://tennislink.usta.com/tournaments/Draws/Ev
