Two of the best players in San Marcos boys volleyball history will go against each other Saturday at the AVP Tour Belmar Beach Open in New Jersey.
Todd Rogers and Brook Billings will be on opposite sides of the net in a first-round match. Rogers and partner Phil Dalhausser, the 2008 Olympic champions, are the No. 1 team in the world. Billings and his partner Dave McKienzie are the lowest seeded qualifying team (No. 17) to make the main draw in Belmar.
Billings, 30, a U.S. Olympic indoor team member who has been playing professionally indoors overseas, is playing in only his seventh AVP event. Rogers, 36, has played in 256 tournaments during a 16-year beach career with 49 titles on the domestic tour and 64 overall.
Billings and McKienzie defeated the top-seeded qualifying team of Jeremie Holmes and Curt Toppell , 21-18, 18-21, 15-10, in their final match Friday to earn the spot opposite Rogers and Dalhausser.
Billings and McKienzie finished 25th at last weekend’s AVP event in Virginia Beach, Va.
Rogers and Dalhausser are coming off an international tour championship in Prague, Czech Republic.
