Field still can’t catch Clark in swim-run race

The “Dominator” was at it again at East Beach on Tuesday.

Jon Clark, who has dominated the Semana Nautica 5-mile biathlon since the mid-1980s, tuned up for this summer’s competition by winning the weekly Reef and Run Series duathalon.

Clark covered the 1-kilometer swim and 2-mile run in 31 minutes, 43 seconds. His swim time of 15:46 was the fastest of the overall field.

Following his victory, Clark received the honor of Semana Nautica Athlete of the Year for 2009. Clark, 49, has owned the annual city summer sports festival biathlon (4-mile beach run, 1-mile swim) race. He won last year’s event in 48.10.

“He’s won it more than 20 times,” said Jane Cairns, a longtime ocean swimmer and the swim coordinator for the Reef and Run Series. “He’s our resident biathlon champion”

Former Dos Pueblos swim star Trevor Kosmo, 19, finished second to Clark on Tuesday in 34:08, and Isabel Dickinson, 21, was third in 36:14.

Women took the top two places in the 1-mile swim. Kristen Burnett won the race in 23:18 and Katherine Warren finished behind her in 24:06. Dan O’Meara, 63, was third in 24:44.

In the running events, Jennifer Beckerman captured the 4-miler in 27:24 followed by Jason Codelin (27:38) and Michael Lionella of Carpinteria (29:39).

Josh Reed won the 2-mile in 12:40. Branko Steets (13:09) and Jeannee Diaz (14:10) finished second and third, respectively.
