The newly constructed Henry Bergmann Court, named after Santa Barbara beach volleyball legend Henry Bergmann, will be officially dedicated on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at 4 PM. The public is invited to attend. The ceremony will be followed by a legends volleyball game featuring noted players from Santa Barbara and Southern California.
Santa Barbara’s East Beach has long been a popular beach volleyball facility dating back to the 1950’s with its swarm of volleyball courts on a broad stretch of sand facing the Channel Islands. In addition to local devotees of the beach volleyball, East Beach has also spawned and featured many world class players, including current Olympic champions Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser as well as three time gold medalist Karch Kiraly.

The late Henry Bergmann was East Beach’s first legend. A soft-spoken 1962 graduate of Santa Barbara High School, Bergmann’s unrivaled power, fluidity of movement and work ethic were legendary. Partnering with Larry Rundle, he confronted beach volleyball icons for the era, Ron Lang and Ron Von Hagen, throughout the late sixties and early seventies in some epic battles.
His talent, character and dedication have inspired a group of local enthusiasts to honor his memory by raising funds to convert one of the courts in honor of Henry Bergmann.
In view of the fiscal restraints the city of Santa Barbara faces and in cooperation with the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Santa Barbara and the PARC Foundation, the Friends of East Beach has been formed with the goal of upgrading all the other courts to new standards from their current varying stages of disrepair.
The dedication of the newly completed Henry Bergmann Court will serve as a kick-off of a fund-raising campaign to achieve the above goal.
