Semifinal spot comes easy for Dons

The Santa Barbara boys tennis team made a rout of its CIF quarterfinal match on Tuesday, beating Woodbridge 15-3 in Irvine.

Despite the final score, the match was close between the two teams until the end of the second round.

In the first round, the score was 2-2 with two matches still on the court. The Santa Barbara doubles team of Adrian Huffard and Logan Liddell clinched the remaining doubles set in a tiebreaker to win the first round, 4-2.

In the second round, Santa Barbara’s No. 1 singles player, Chase Melton, faced off against Woodbridge’s No.1 player, Mike Zablan. The match was close between the two highly ranked Southern California players, but it was Melton who came out on top, 6-3. While Zablan was a quarterfinalist in this year’s Ojai Tournament, Santa Barbara’s No. 3 singles player, Sammar Garcia won 6-3 in the third round today, proving that the Santa Barbara tennis team just had his number on Tuesday.

While the Dons may have dominated their singles matches, it was the doubles teams who shined in the match, winning all nine of their sets. The No. 1 doubles team of Jimmy Vaughn and Chris Williams won all of their sets 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 and the No. 2 doubles team of Matt Baum and Danny Diaz won all of their sets 6-3, 6-1, 6-0.

By the end of the second round Santa Barbara was already winning 9-3 in sets and was ahead by 40 games.

“It was a great first and second round by our guys today,” said Dons head coach Steve Geremia. “No matter what the Woodbridge team tried to do, they couldn’t break our concentration, and that’s why we came out on top today; we’re really proud of our guys.”

In the next round of CIF, Santa Barbara will play their rivals, Corona Del Mar at home next Tuesday beginning at 3:00 p.m.

“Come out and support our guys,” added Geremia, “It’s going to be a tough match and we’re going to give them everything that Santa Barbara has got to give.”
