SBVC squads ride rocky road on final Anaheim weekend

It was a tough weekend for the Santa Barbara Volleyball Club teams in the final regular-season tournament in Anaheim last weekend.

The 12 Smack squad placed 4th for the day in Division 4, losing to Sunshine 12-South Bay Falyn 25-11, 25-18, Mavericks 12-Bonne 25-17, 25-11, and SCVC 12-White 25-10, 25-11.  Despite the tough losses, coach Cary Whittaker mentioned that Catherine Hogan played great defense as our Libero and Ruby Haber had many service aces!

The 15 Smack team won two of three matches in pool play to place 2nd and head into the playoffs. The team then lost in the first set in the first playoff round, 26-24, and ultimately lost the match in two sets.

The 15-White team went 1-2 in pool play, losing to Sports Shack 15’s in 2 sets and OCVC in 3 sets, and beating TCA 15-2 in 3 sets. The team then lost the first playoff round against Club West 15-2 in two sets. Coach John Sener thought that despite the ultimate losses, the team played hard until the end and went out fighting.

The 15-Red team lost all three matches in its pool against California Heat 15 Pride 25-21, 25-17, Epic 15-2s 25-13, 25-20, 18-16, and Culver 15-John 25-23, 25-14.

“Yes, we lost all three matches, but on the bright side, we played well against all of the teams in our pool,” said coach Mickey Caughey.

The team competed with a skeleton crew, missing some players for the day.

“I’m proud of the girls for hanging in there with only 6 players…Marina Boulanger had a great day hitting with 13 kills, Hailey Hall scooped up 23 digs and Stamatia Scarvelis roofed our opponents eight times with her blocking,” noted Caughey.

The team placed fourth for the day.

The teams will head into their final club tournament of the season, the two-day SCVA Regionals, at the end of May.
