Coffin, a 17-year-old from Montecito, won his first two heats in the first and quarterfinal rounds, beating past ASP Junior Pro champions Keanu Asing and Nat Young along the way.

In the semifinals, Coffin found himself battling Young, Evan Thompson and Tyler Newton for two spots in the final. Young got revenge from their quarterfinal heat, winning this one with a two-wave score of 17.33. Newton’s 12.33 eliminated Thompson and Coffin in equal-5th place.

The final saw Andrew Doheny come from the other side of the bracket to edge Young for the title.

Coffin is also currently competing in another contest, although this one is out of the water. Coffin and filmmaker Ryan Perry have entered a submission to be considered for inclusion in Taylor Steele’s new film, Innersection. The winning clips, which will be determined by user voting, will not only be included in the film, but will also have a chance at a $100,000 Grand Prize.
