Carrillo’s blast helps Warriors to upset win

Coach Henry Gonzales felt that the Carpinteria softball team played one of its best games of the season on Thursday, which was certainly good timing.

The Warriors (14-8) advanced to the second round of the playoffs with an upset win over Liberty League champion Faith Baptist (18-5)

Sarah Carrillo belted a 3-run homer in the third inning and Carpinteria played an error-free game defensively, supporting a solid outing from pitcher Catalina Maldonado.

“We played the kind of ball that we’re capable of, and that’s gonna give us an opportunity to win games,” said Gonzales.

Maldonado struck out five and didn’t issue a walk in her complete-game effort. The Warriors will play either Boron or Marshall on Tuesday, with the location to be determined by coinflip.
