Breakers brought down by Newport Surf

The Santa Barbara Breakers were no match for the undefeated Newport Beach Surf on Saturday, dropping a 120-109 decision to the league-leading visitors at the SBCC Sports Pavilion.

Santa Barbara scored 39 points in the fourth quarter to shrink the margin of victory for the Surf, which led by as many as 32 points in the third quarter.

Jonathan Gibson, a former player at New Mexico State, led the Breakers with 22 points while Newport’s Joe Udeoji led all scorers with 30.

Newport Beach stands alone at the top of the West Coast Professional Basketball League with a 6-0 record, while Santa Barbara is 3-3.

The Breakers host Long Beach on Saturday in their next game. Tip off is at 7:15 p.m. in the Sports Pavilion.

  1. The Newport Surf are playing extremely well together. They are the team to beat this year at the WCBL. Their top scorers Joe Udeoji and Justin Johnson seems to be unstoppable. I wa lucky to watch some of their game this year, and have to say that their coach has done a great job in recruiting Joe. I'm sure having an NBA vet (Tony Farmer) has added to their overall success as well. Joe can play both the guard and forward position offensively and defensively with no problem.
