Vaqueros fail to shut door on Condors

SBCC erased a 4-0 deficit and took an 8-6 lead in the eighth inning on Tuesday afternoon before Oxnard rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth to post an 11-8 baseball victory over the visiting Vaqueros.

Oxnard (20-8, 10-2) bolstered its position atop the WSC North while the Vaqueros fell to 17-11 and 7-5. The Condors took the season series 4-0.

Conner Rehage belted his team-high 10th homer, a three-run shot over the scoreboard in the fourth, to pull Santa Barbara within one at 4-3. “I’ve been coming to Oxnard for 10 years and that was only the second time I’ve seen a right-handed hitter hit it over the left-field wall,” said coach Teddy Warrecker.

Danny Cavaletto went 4-for-6 and had two doubles for the second straight game while Rehage was 3-5 with four RBIs and Chase Yost was 2-4 with two RBIs.

Yost’s RBI double tied it at 6 in the sixth and the Vaqueros took an 8-6 lead with two outs in the eighth. Cavaletto doubled and scored on a single by Yost, who went to second on the throw. Abe Ruiz then drove in Yost with a hit.

Oxnard’s five runs in the eighth all came with two outs.

“Early in the game, Abe hit a ball just foul that would have been a three-run homer,” noted Warrecker. “In the sixth, Conner was called out at home and we thought the catcher never tagged him. That’s four runs off the board.

“But give credit to Oxnard, they came back and got hits when they needed to.”

SBCC travels to Moorpark on Thursday.
