Gauchos off to 2-0 start in Big West

No. 12 UCSB (14-8, 2-0) defeated No. 13 UC Irvine (9-13, 0-2), 13-7, on Saturday at Campus Pool. Senior Lizzie Rouleau picked up a hat-trick in the victory and the Gauchos moved to 2-0 in the Big West.

UCSB came on strong out of the gate, scoring three goals in the first two minutes of the match, while the Anteaters posted just one. At the end of the first quarter the Gauchos led 5-2. In the second quarter, the play evened and each team netted two more goals, leaving the halftime score at 7-4.

[imagebrowser id=19]During the third, UCSB padded it’s lead by three additional points, while holding UCI scoreless. In the final period, the Anteaters were able to score three goals, but were matched by three UCSB goals, ending the game in a 13-7 Gaucho victory. UCSB is now 3-1 this season against the defending Big West Champion Anteaters.

Coach Wolf Wigo said, “We played strong defense, and our shooters were excellent today. We’re playing the best water polo of the year, at the right time.”

UCSB will return to the water next Saturday, at Campus Pool, when they face Cal State Northridge (9-12, 2-0) at 12:00 p.m. and Cal Baptist (18-14) at 5:00 p.m.
