Gauchos grab conference opener over 49ers

No. 12 UCSB (13-8) overcame Long Beach State (8-14) by a score of 6-4 on Saturday at Campus Pool. Goalie Ruth Milne recorded 13 saves for the Gauchos in the conference opener.

UCSB put the heat on the 49ers early, scoring three goals, while playing stellar defense to hold Long Beach scoreless. The second quarter saw more of the same, as the Gauchos posted two more goals and continued to keep Long Beach away from the net.

In the third quarter, Long Beach registered their first goal of the contest. However, it was matched by a UCSB goal in the same period. During the fourth, UCSB rotated in players and the 49ers where able to net three more goals, but never truly threatened to foil the Gaucho victory.

Coach Wolf Wigo said, “We were able to do everything that we wanted to do in the first half. We played tremendous defense and Ruth Milne was outstanding”

UCSB will be back in action at 12 p.m. on Saturday, when they face No. 13 UC Irvine (9-11) at Campus Pool.
