Dons netters sharp in win over Royals

Coming off of a grueling week of competition, Santa Barbara High’s tennis team was on the money on Thursday in a 13-5 crosstown win against San Marcos.

“We looked very sharp despite the fatigue factor,” said Dons coach Steve Geremia. “We’ve played so much tennis lately, and our guys were hitting everything really clean.”

Sammer Garcia, Chase Melton and freshman Graham Maassen went unbeaten in their singles sets for Santa Barbara. San Marcos freshman standout Petar Jivkov picked up a set in singles but ran into some stiff competition in his other two sets.

“Petar just ran into a couple of players that were older, and he caught them when the were really pl;aying hot,” said Geremia. “He’s a very good player and fun to watch.”

The Royals, who were coming off of a big win over Ventura, were missing some key doubles players in the match.

Santa Barbara (11-1, 6-0) plays Dos Pueblos on Tuesday. San Marcos is now 9-4, 2-3.
