Dons make it a decade of league dominance

Santa Barbara High’s boys tennis team had a lot to celebrate on Friday afternoon. Not only was it Senior Day for the Dons, but their 12-6 victory over Dos Pueblos marked the 90th straight Channel League victory and 10th straight league championship for Santa Barbara.

“We’re all really happy about that,” said Dons No. 1 singles player Chase Melton, a senior who will be playing for Cal next year. “It shows our great tradition.”

Dons seniors Dan Diaz, left, and Matt Baum swept their three sets on Senior Day.

The seniors led the way against the Chargers, finishing a combined 7-0 on the day. The senior doubles team of Dan Diaz and Matt Baum swept three sets while Melton went 2-0 in singles, including a 6-2 victory over Dos Pueblos No. 1 Sasha Gryaznov. Jim Vaughan and Chris Williams collected two more wins for the seniors.

The five seniors led the Dons to a 10-2 lead after two rounds before subs flushed out most of Santa Barbara’s starters in the third round.

The Chargers spread their six set wins around as no player or doubles team won more than a single set. DP took three singles sets, one each from Christian Edstrom, Stephen Long and Sasha Gryaznov.

Dos Pueblos finished its league season with a 4-4 record, good for third place and a playoff berth.

The Chargers and the Dons first decide Channel League singles and doubles champions next week at Dos Pueblos and Cathedral Oaks. Monday’s matches will be played at Dos Pueblos starting at 1:30 p.m.
