Dons’ doubles cleans out Cougars

Santa Barbara High’s doubles team nearly had a perfect day on Wednesday, winning nine sets by a combined game score of 54-3.

Ventura’s singles players couldn’t offset the ridiculous pace and the Cougars fell 10-8 in a Channel League contest.

Each of Santa Barbara’s three doubles teams, Chase Melton/Jeremy Kirchoff, Matt Baum/Jim Vaughan, Logan Lidell/Chris Grant, swept while going 18-1 in games.

The quick moving doubles sets were pretty much decided by the time the third round of singles play had begun, giving the Dons an insurmountable lead in games and the match well before all of the singles matches had been completed.

Graham Maassen recorded Santa Barbara’s lone win in singles, taking a 6-2 victory in the second round.

Wednesday’s match was originally scheduled for next Thursday but was moved because Santa Barbara will be competing in Ojai starting that day. The Dons (10-1, 5-0) still have two league matches before then, starting with San Marcos at home on Thursday.
