City College comes in third at WSC meet

Johan Lindqvist took first in the triple jump (44 feet, 7 1/2 inches) and second in the long jump (20-7 1/4) on Friday as SBCC placed third in the six-team WSC Coastal Track Meet at Ventura College.

Aeryus Holloway led a 1-2-3 Vaquero effort in the long jump with a leap of 20-7 1/4. He had the same mark as Lindqvist but got the win because his second-best jump was better. Ronald Dudley was close behind in third at 20-6 1/4. Chase Lee won the javelin (164-10 3/4) and Stephen Scrafford took first in the 3000m in 8:51.86.

Moorpark won the men’s meet with 136 points, followed by Cuesta (110), SBCC (93.5) and Santa Monica (93).

“Our jumpers had a great meet, especially Johan,” said Vaquero coach Scott Fickerson. “It was great to see Stephen looking like his old self again. He led from start to finish and dominated the race.”

The Vaqueros were fourth in the women’s meet, led by Samantha Dougherty. She took second in the 1500m (5:04.54) and third in the 800 (2:30.39). Emelie Lundin was second in the 800 (2:30.38), one-hundreth of a second in front of Dougherty.

Carina Celio was second in the triple jump (32-11 3/4) while Tina Berglund and Linnea Hjelmtrop posted thirds in the 100m (13.26) and 400m (1:02.49), respectively.

“We had a great team effort,” noted Fickerson. “A lot of seconds and thirds added up to a strong team performance.”

SBCC returns to action on April 24 in the WSC Prelims at Ventura.
