UCSB softball splits with Sun Devils, Samford

Lindsey Correa (2-4) picked up the win in the circle after tossing the complete game and allowing two runs on six hits. She walked five and struck out seven in the victory.

Offensively, DePompa led the Gauchos with a 2-for-4 showing and two runs scored. Ziegler, meanwhile, stretched her hitting streak to seven games with a 1-for-3 showing, also tallying a run, an RBI and a stolen base.

In the first game of the day, Arizona State opened the scoring at the bottom of the first inning when Katelyn Boyd crossed home after a Gaucho throwing error. A two-run homer over the left field fence by Katie Crabb in the second inning stretched the Sun Devil lead to 3-0.

In the third, Krista Donnenwirth hit a two-run shot to left center field and one out later, Talor Haro drove Sam Parlich home to push ASU ahead, 6-0. The Sun Devils were able to cut the game short at the bottom of the fifth when, after a double play, the Gauchos committed a pair of throwing errors allowing two more ASU runs and giving the Sun Devils the 8-0 victory.

Ziegler led the Gauchos going 2-for-3 at the plate. Krista Cobb (2-4) took the loss after tossing 2.1 innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits. MeLinda Matsumoto tossed 2.1 innings of relief allowing three runs, one earned, on seven hits.

The Gauchos will conclude action at the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational on Sunday when they take on Northern Iowa at 10 a.m.
