Selarz steadies SBCC’s Saturday

Greg Selarz held Ventura to one run in seven innings on Saturday afternoon, guiding SBCC to a 7-1 WSC baseball victory at Pershing Park.

Steven Keller hit a solo homer in the second and Christopher Lauritzen made it 5-1 with a two-run blast in the fourth as the Vaqueros (11-8, 4-2 WSC North) rolled to their fourth straight victory. SBCC has outscored the opposition 48-15 during the win streak.

Keller, Sam Johnston, Abe Ruiz and Chase Yost all had two hits.

“This was probably our most complete game of the year as far as pitching, hitting and defense,” said 10th-year coach Teddy Warrecker. “Greg has done a great job for us on Saturdays. He was very much in control. He’s not uncomfortable with guys on base.”

Selarz, a sophomore right-hander from Calabasas, improved to 3-0 by holding the left-handed rich Pirates (6-9, 1-5) to eight singles over seven innings with six strikeouts, one walk and three hit batters. Kylin Turnbull pitched the final two frames, allowing one hit with two strikeouts.

“Having the luxury of a well-rested Turnbull for two innings is huge,” stated Warrecker. “It’s a byproduct of our starters going deep into games and we really struggled with that last year. Kyle had dominating stuff and I expect him to keep getting better in the future.”

With a 5-1 lead in the sixth, Danny Cavaletto, Daniel Howell and Lauritzen were hit by pitches to load the bases with one out. Following a strikeout, Ruiz drilled a two-run single up the middle to extend the lead to 7-1.

The defense turned two double plays and had just one error.
“We were much better defensively today,” noted Warrecker. “That’s the last phase of the game that we’ve got to be good at because we’ve been pitching and hitting exceptionally well.
“I’ve been preaching to them all week that once we get good on the defensive side, this team could really start to roll.”
The Vaqueros travel to Hancock on Tuesday.
