Royals play strong but lose late leads

Johnny Manzo racked up 16 kills and sophomore libero Kyle Estabrooks shoveled up 25 digs, but the San Marcos volleyball team let some advantages slip away in a 5-set loss to visiting Arcadia on Friday. Game scores were 26-24, 14-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-12.

The Royals (1-1) led 24-19 in the first set but gave up seven straight points. They were up 19-9 in the fourth and 11-10 in the fifth before letting Arcadia climb back.

“They just went on a tear a couple of times. I thought we played pretty doggone well tonight though,” said coach Roger Kuntz.

He also noted that junior Neil Holliday has been stepping into the role of setter nicely in the early-goings of the season. San Marcos takes on Arroyo Grande on Thursday.
