Oxnard pitching holds down Vaqueros again

J.C. Aguayo pitched a three-hitter Thursday, leading Oxnard to a 4-2 WSC baseball victory over SBCC.

It was the second complete game in three days for the Condors (10-5, 2-0). The visiting Vaqueros cut the deficit to 2-1 on Sam Johnston’s bases-loaded walk in the fourth and Abe Ruiz scored in the ninth on Zach Pecyna’s fielder’s choice.

SBCC (7-8, 0-2) has dropped lost four of its last five. The Vaqueros have scored two runs or less in the four losses.

“We didn’t do anything at the plate,” said SBCC coach Teddy Warrecker. “We did get six walks and two hit batters, so we had some baserunners. And we did have some quality at-bats.
“The only encouraging thing is we played back-to-back games as poorly as we can play and we were still competitive.”

Santa Barbara had four errors, leading to two unearned runs.

Joe McGrew (2-1) pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts. Kylin Turnbull tossed 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief.

“We’ve gotten great pitching recently but we’ve got to find a way to get right at the plate and defensively,” said Warrecker.

The Vaqueros return home on Saturday to take on Moorpark at 1 p.m.
