Dons recover behind Spatz

Alex Spatz pitched in his first game of the season for the Santa Barbara Dons on Saturday. After a complete-game shutout, it probably won’t be his last.

The Dons rebounded from a loss to San Marcos on Friday with a 9-0 blanking of El Camino Real behind Spatz, who struck out two and walked one to pick up his first win of the year.

Pepe Gil had a big day at the plate, driving in three runs while scoring three more himself. Gil put the Dons on the scoreboard in the third inning with a two-run home run that was the start of a four-run inning.

Santa Barbara added two more in the fourth and three in the fifth.  Jack Crummer, Joey Gonzales and Gil each had RBI singles in the fifth. Colin Eaton and Cameron Gniadek, who had two hits and two RBIs, both came through with run-scoring doubles.
