Dons do it at Birnam, beat Friars

Santa Barbara’s boys golf team hosted the reigning CIF champions on Thursday and lived up to the challenge by defeating the Friars 359-375.

Jack Perry scored a two-under 68 to lead a tight bundle of Dons all under 75.  Santa Barbara, itself with title aspirations this season, improved to 9-2 on the season. One of those losses was an early-season defeat to Servite, now 10-3.

The two elite teams met at Birnam Wood on Montecito, where the Dons had only played once before this year.

“We wanted to play them at what is more of a neutral course just to see where we’re at,” said Santa Barbara head coach James Bedard, liking what he learned. “This was kind of a signiture win for us.”

Ray Gerow shot a 71, Shane Lebow a 72, Mickey Kirby a 73 and Sean Searls a 75 to fill out Santa Barbara’s scorecard.

Servite’s low score came from Patrick Cantlay, who recorded a two-over 72.
