Charger swimmers tear it up in Long Beach

Theo Coine, Darrell Eacret, Nolan Gardener and Christian Terpening were each top qualifiers at the Long Beach Wilson Invitational swim meet on Tuesday as the Dos Pueblos boys team had an impressive first day at the event.

Terpening was tops in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.21, while Coine finished first in the 200 freestyle at 1:49.35. Gardener touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle with a mark of 49.02 seconds and took third in the 50 freestyle at 26.62 seconds. Eacret was first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.04 seconds.

The Chargers also finished ahead of the pack in the 200 freestyle relay despite missing standout sprinter Chase Racich.

“Chase is probably one of the top five sprinters in Southern California, but he had a family reunion to attend so Theo stepped in for him and swam a really good split time of 22.9 (seconds),” said coach Chris Parrish.

Coine also took second in the 500 freestyle by finishing in 4:46.29. Sjors Van Alphen, who came in seeded 12th, finished in fifth place.  Eacret was fourth and Kevin Cappon seventh in the 100 butterfly, while Josh Pighetti finished in fifth place in the 100 breast. Cappon and Pighetti were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 200 IM. The 200 freestyle relay team took third overall.

“We set ourselves up pretty well heading into the finals,” said Parrish.
