Carrillo, Wong bring fireworks in SBCC sweep

Jeana Carrillo hit a grand slam and tossed a five-hitter in the first game on Tuesday and Janelle Wong ended the second game with a three-run blast to left field as SBCC swept Hancock in a WSC softball doubleheader at Pershing Park. The scores were 15-4 in the five-inning opener and 10-2 in the nightcap, which ended in the bottom of the sixth due to the eight-run rule.

Wong, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High, had two doubles and two RBIs in the first game for the Vaqueros (14-8, 4-3), who’ve won three in a row. Joan Cannon had a two-run double in a five-run first inning and knocked in another run in the second, when SBCC erupted for 10 runs.

Carrillo hit the grand slam, her first homer of the year, in the 10-run inning and Wong drove in two with a double down the left-field line. “We practiced against slower pitching on Monday and concentrated on staying back in the hitting zone,” said Carrillo, a freshman from Lompoc High. “I got a high ball on the grand slam. That’s my favorite pitch.”

It marked the second time in six days that the Vaqueros have scored 10 runs in an inning.

“We came out strong in the first game with five runs and that set the pace of the game,” said SBCC coach Paula Congleton. “We didn’t have any preconceptions of who Hancock was … we just know that for conference we have to play our game and play hard.”

Carrillo held the Bulldogs (3-11, 1-7) to one run on three hits in the first 4 1/3 innings. Nicole Adair scored three runs in the opener while Laura Cannon and Kellee Venturi each had two hits. Venturi capped the 10-run second with an RBI triple to right field.

In the second game, Liliana Caughman tossed a four-hitter and didn’t allow a run until Alyssa Ray homered to lead off the sixth.

The Vaqueros took a 5-0 lead in the second, capped by Laura Cannon’s two-run single. The lead grew to 7-0 in the fourth on RBI singles from Laura Cannon and pinch-hitter Kailey Snyder. After Hancock scored twice in the sixth, Adair and Laura Cannon walked in the bottom of the sixth and Wong followed with her second homer in three games.

SBCC, which is playing six games in six days this week, travels to Cuesta on Thursday before hosting its own Bash at the Beach this weekend.
