SBCC knocked down in ninth

Austin Alva outdueled Zach Edgington on Thursday and Irvine Valley pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth to edge SBCC 2-1 in a nonconference baseball game at Irvine. The Vaqueros (5-4) failed to hit a homer for the first time this year and split the home-and-home series with the Lasers (6-5).
Alva tossed a seven-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk. Edgington went seven innings, giving up one run on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

The Vaqueros took a 1-0 lead in the third on a two-out single by Steven Keller and an RBI double by Tommy White. In the top of the ninth, Conner Rehage doubled and Abe Ruiz walked but pinch hitter Chris Lauritzen lined to center to end the threat.

The Lasers tied it in the seventh with a sacrifice fly off Edgington. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth and a runner on second, Cole Wilson hit a chopper that went off the glove of shortstop Sam Johnston for an error.

“That was Edgington’s best start of the year,” said coach Teddy Warrecker. “We just didn’t get enough hits.”

The Vaqueros play at Santa Ana, ranked No. 2 in Southern Cal, on Friday at 2 p.m.
