Royals score 42 but can’t stay with Cougars

Against a team like Ventura, it was almost like a victory.

Kristyn Miller said she doesn’t remember scoring more than 21 against the mighty Cougars in her four years with the San Marcos girls basketball team, but the Royals doubled that in a 64-42 road loss on Wednesday.

Kimmy Sanchez and Hannah Dietz each hit a pair of 3-pointers. Sanchez finished with 13 points, and the Royals won the second quarter 17-7. Dietz hit both of her shots in the period.

“Scoring 42 against them is a big deal for us,” said Miller. “Five of our seven players scored in the second quarter and we were successful because of that.”

She also said that the Royals (11-15, 1-7 Channel League), who are hoping for an at-large playoff bid, have been playing their best basketball of the season over the last three games.
