Gaucho poloists take sixth in San Diego

No. 14 UC Santa Barbara (6-5) ended the UCSD Triton Invitational by splitting a pair of games with UC Davis and Cal State Northridge and taking sixth place in the tournament. The Gauchos overcame No. 15 UC Davis (3-5) by a score of 7-4 before being defeated 8-3 by No. 12 Cal State Northridge (7-1) on Sunday afternoon.

The Gauchos jumped out to a 2-0 lead, in the first quarter against the Aggies, and never looked back. In the second, UCSB outscored Davis three goals to two. In the second half, each team posted two goals, leaving the Gauchos ahead, 7-4, at the final buzzer.

In UCSB’s final match of the day, Northridge quelled the Gaucho offense, and outscored them by a count of 8-3. In the first half of play, the Matadors netted five goals, while holding Gauchos to just one. UCSB found the net twice in the second half, but also gave up three more scores to Northridge. With the loss, UCSB finished sixth in the UCSD Triton Invitational.

Freshman Shelby Haroldson, had three goals on the day, and a total of four during this weekend’s tournament.

The Gauchos next game will be in Irvine, Calif. on Feb. 27, at the UC Irvine Invitational.
