Another split puts UCSB in 11th

NEWPORT BEACH – No. 14 UCSB (8-7) was defeated by No. 9 Cal State Northridge (11-4), 10-6, then overcame No. 11 UC Irvine (7-7), 11-3. After Sunday’s games at Corona del Mar High School, UCSB was 2-2 on the weekend, and finished in 11th place in the UC Irvine Invitational.

UCSB fell behind early to Cal State Northridge, trailing 3-2 at the end of the first. In the second quarter, the Matadors poured on the offense, outscoring the Gauchos 4-1. Each team posted three goals in the second half, and UCSB was unable to overcome Northridge’s early onslaught, losing by a score of 10-6.

In their afternoon game, the Gauchos’ offense finally caught fire. UCSB outscored UC Irvine 6-0, in the first quarter of play. In the second quarter, UCSB was scoreless, and UCI chipped away at the Gauchos’ lead, with a single goal. In the final two periods, UCSB tallied five more goals, and collected an 11-3 win over the tournament host.

Christie Clark led the Gauchos in scoring at the UC Irvine Invitational, notching three goals on Sunday, and a total of five over the weekend.

The Gauchos next game will be on Thursday, Mar. 4, against Fresno Pacific (1-10). The match will be played at UCSB’s Campus Pool, and will begin at 6 pm.
