UCSB’s Nwaba goes for second at UW

SEATTLE — Barbara Nwaba scored 3931 points to capture second place in the pentathlon at the UW Invitational, held at the University of Washington’s Dempsey Indoor track facility.

Nwaba’s score places her on the bubble for qualification to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. The automatic qualifying standard for the pentathlon is 4050. The remaining spots are filled by athletes who have scored above the provisional standard of 3750, for a maximum of 16 competitors. Last season it took 3960 points to qualify.

COMPLETE UW INVITATIONAL RESULTS

The meet began well for Nwaba with a performance of 8.83 in the 60m hurdles, which was on pace to break her outdoor 100m hurdles record of 14.21. Nwaba would officially claim a personal best in the next event, the high jump, with a clearance of 5-10.5 (1.79m). This betters her previous mark of 1.75m from last season’s Big West Championships.

After a bit of a stumble in the shot put, Nwaba set another personal best in the long jump with a mark of 17-9.5 (5.42m). She would then run a 2:23.66 in the 800m to conclude her scoring.

The UW Invitational will resume tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. There are 17 members of the Gaucho women’s track team scheduled to compete throughout tomorrow’s events.
