Overtime victories book-ended a nail-biting Channel League wrestling match at Buena on Thursday, as Dos Pueblos defeated the Bulldogs 34-30.
The Chargers had a 31-30 lead heading into the final match, a 152-pound bout between DP’s Jose Sanabria and Buena’s Carlos Penaloza. Both are first-year wrestlers, and Sanabria ended up winning the match with a single-leg takedown in the overtime period to seal the 9-7 victory. The match began when Abraham Lizama defeated Alex Ayala 5-3 in overtime in their 160-pound match.
“It was about as dramatic as you could make it. It was crazy,” said coach Anthony Califano. He added that Buena used to be an easy win for DP, but the Buena’s program has made admirable improvements in the past few years.
DP seniors Chuy Lopez, Shannon Dixon, Chris Aguilera and Mario Elias all picked up wins to lead the way.
